Al morir tendría que descuartizarle minuciosamente y meter sus restos en una cuba preparada con una extraña pócima. La cuba la había escondido previamente Don Enrique entre un montón de estiércol con el fin de mantener caliente el preparado.
Para que nadie notara la ausencia del escritor Villena tenía un plan. El criado llevaría el sombrero de su amo durante los nueve meses que duraba el experimento. Su idea es que con el sombrero el criado adquiriría el aspecto de su amo y nadie notaría su muerte.
Y así fue, y el criado se paseó por Toledo con el sombrero durante meses y todos creían ver al amo. Día tras día suplanto la identidad del escritor hasta uno en el que se topó de frente con una procesión del viático que no pudo esquivar. Por respeto tenía que descubrirse ante el sacerdote que se acercaba con los santos óleos como hacían todos los vecinos de Toledo.
Pero el criado no se descubrió, y esto llamo la atención de uno de los ciudadanos que, indignado, ante el feo acto del que se suponía era Don Enrique de Villena, le quitó el sombrero. Fue entonces cuando todos encontraron bajo aquel atuendo al criado negro en lugar del escritor.
Ante aquel hecho, el criado fue conducido ante el Santo Oficio siendo acusado de brujería y de matar a su señor, ante lo que no tuvo más que confesar lo ocurrido y conducir a la Santa Hermandad hasta el estercolero en el que se escondía la cuba. Estos, convencidos que allí obraba más el diablo que Dios, rompieron la cuba y se derramó sobre el suelo un líquido viscoso en el que flotaba lo que parecía un feto de pocos meses.
